Stephen
White
Stephen White was born in Morley, West
Yorkshire, in October 1957.
He attended Peel Street Junior School, Morley, and Batley
Grammar School before joining the Batley News and Morley
Observer as a trainee reporter in September 1975.
Here, he met Leslie Overend, a formidable character
and a legend in photographic and local newspaper circles,
and established a friendship that was to last until
Leslie’s death in 1989.
In 1982, Stephen joined the Yorkshire Evening Post,
in Leeds, as a sub-editor.
After five years working for newspapers in Sydney and
Perth, Australia, he joined the Yorkshire Post, before
returning to the Yorkshire Evening Post as deputy production
editor, then sports-editor-in-chief.
In April 1999 he was appointed editor of the Wiltshire
Times Series of newspapers, based in Trowbridge, Wiltshire.
In December 2001 he joined the Western Daily Press in
Bristol, where he became features editor and travel
editor, assistant editor then, in August 2006, deputy
editor.
In 1992, Stephen published a book of Leslie’s
photographs from the 1960s. The book was entitled Overend’s
Morley, 100 pictures of Morley people at work and play.
A limited number of copies are still available. (Place

Since June 1993, Stephen has been contributing
a picture a week to the Morley Observer for its popular
Overend’s Morley feature, where readers are asked
to identify old pictures and contribute their comments.
In recent years Stephen has been busy archiving Leslie’s
huge collection of negatives and is keen to see his
pictures “live” again.
